Volunteer Spotlight

Hear From Our Community

“I started as a weekend food bank volunteer and eventually became a crew leader for our disaster response program. The training JHF provides is genuinely professional-grade, and knowing that my CERT certification came through their partnership with Sacramento County OES gives me real confidence during deployments. This organization changed how I think about community.”

Rachel Okonkwo Disaster Response Crew Leader, 3 years

“My daughter and I volunteer together in the Senior Companion Program every Saturday morning. She reads aloud while I help Mrs. Nakamura with her tablet. Watching my eleven-year-old learn patience and empathy through direct service has been one of the most rewarding parenting experiences of my life. The orientation process was thorough and made us both feel prepared.”

T
Teresa Gutierrez Senior Companion Volunteer, 1.5 years

“As a retired high school biology teacher, the Youth Tutoring program gave me a way to keep doing what I love without the burnout of full-time teaching. I meet with three students each week at the Meadowview Community Center. Two of my first mentees are now in college. JHF handles all the logistics so I can just focus on the kids.”
